Why go to Sri Lanka now?

Sri Lanka currently gives Indians a FREE 30-day e-visa, flights are short, and the island packs beaches, tea mountains, leopard safaris and 2,000-year-old cities into distances you can drive in half a day. A 4-night trip costs about ₹35,000–₹55,000 per person from Kolkata — the best-value international beach holiday after Thailand.

4-night itinerary — Colombo · Kandy · Bentota

  1. Colombo arrival — Galle Face sunset, seafood dinner.
  2. To Kandy — Pinnawala elephant orphanage en route, Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, cultural dance show.
  3. Kandy → Bentota — via Kitulgala (optional white-water rafting); evening river safari on the Madu Ganga.
  4. Bentota — beach day, turtle hatchery, water sports; day-trip option to Galle Fort (UNESCO).
  5. Departure — Colombo airport (CMB).

Add 2 nights for Ella's tea country (the famous Nine Arches Bridge train ride) or Yala's leopard safari.

Is the Sri Lanka visa really free for Indians?

Yes — Indians get the 30-day double-entry tourist ETA free of charge (a goodwill policy currently extended through 2026). Apply on the official eta.gov.lk portal before flying; approval is usually same-day. Carry your return ticket and hotel booking.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sri Lanka safe to visit now?
Yes — tourism has fully rebounded; the 2022 crisis conditions (fuel queues, shortages) are long past and hotels/transport run normally. Standard travel precautions apply.
Can I pay in Indian Rupees?
No — bring USD or use cards/ATMs for Sri Lankan Rupees (LKR). ₹1 ≈ 3.6 LKR (indicative). UPI acceptance is being piloted at some merchants but don't rely on it.
Is the hill-country train worth it?
The Kandy–Ella stretch is regularly called the world's most beautiful train ride — book reserved seats weeks ahead in season, or Vaanya can arrange first-class observation-car seats with the package.
